DER SANDMANN by E.T.A. Hoffmann
DIRECTOR: Maria Lisa Huber
Buried deep in his subconscious, Nathanael carries the impressions of a fateful childhood event. When the humble weather-glass merchant Coppola enters his life, these memories resurface, revealing an unhealed wound. From it emerges the Sandman—a haunting specter of the past and a manifestation of trauma—dragging Nathanael into a feverish dream where reality and delusion blur, and rational thought is no longer possible. Confronted with his trauma, Nathanael’s body seizes control of his actions, with consequences for his fiancée Clara and his loyal friend Siegmund.
E.T.A. Hoffmann’s chilling tale The Sandman (1816) intertwines with the nightmarish visual worlds of photographer Crystin Moritz to create the perfect setting for this multimedia production by Maria Lisa Huber. The project fuses Fuad-David Buaita’s immersive sound design with performance elements, seamlessly integrating acting and dance (Silvia Salzmann) into a haunting, dreamlike experience.
